THE INTERWAR PERIOD

Between the two major Carlist wars in the 19th century, the Carlism experienced a long transition period. This period was marked by three main elements. In the first place, there was a new pretender, Charles VI, count of Montemolín, giving continuity to the legitimate dynasty. The second element was the outbreak of a civil war in Catalonia, the War of the ‘Matiners’, which established the military nature of the Carlism. And in third place, there were problems in the throne succession during the sixties, which were successfully resolved in the context of the Revolution of 1868 with Charles VII as pretender to the Spanish throne.
